When I first heard the idea for this movie, I knew exactly that it was worth looking into. As is the plight of most minorities living in America struggle with finding affirming images of themselves in media. We could debate rather being a stripper is "affirming" but once you learn about the lead Somlit you realize that in someways it is.
It seems like Hollywood may finally be catching up with times in terms of diversity. Asian Magic Mike follows the wildly popular ABC comedy "Fresh Off The Boat" and precedes "Crazy Rich Asians'" summer theatrical release. While the "Magic Mike" act is presumably designed to appeal to asian female viewers, the hip-hop references and eye candy may draw a wider audience than first anticipated.
