Nashville City Council Condemns Anti-LGBT Adoption Bill
On the record with their disappointment.
On the record with their disappointment. HB 836/SB 1304 was the first bill passed and signed into law this year in Tennessee. The bill allows faith-based, private adoption agencies to deny certain couples. The law prohibits privately licensed agencies from being required to perform, assist, consent to, refer, or participate in a foster placement or adoption of a child with a family that would violate the agency's written religious or moral convictions. A handful of states to date have enacted similar legislation including Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, South Dakota, North Dakota, Virginia, Mississippi, and Michigan. But Michigan agreed in settling a lawsuit to no longer turn away LGBT couples or individuals because of religious objections.z President Donald Trump's administration is currently proposing a rule that would impose the same protections for organizations to discriminate. Earlier this year the city of Nashville passed an official resolution condemning the state's actions.
