You know we are quick to call out any type of homophobia or bigotry in the black community. So it's only fair that we give credit where credit is due. Last week Morehouse (the nation's only historically black all male school) announced that they would begin accepting transexual students in the fall of 2020.
This milestone in relevant for a number of different reasons. One of them being that under the direction of the current commander and chief, transgendered people have been effectively banned from serving in the military. The second being that Morehouse was itself in the news a few years ago for a dress code that many suggested unfairly targeted gay students at the school.
Reactions to the new policy announcement has been decidedly mixed. As the alma mater of black leaders like Martin Luther King; the college remains one of the most venerated institutions in the African-American communities. How successful Morehouse is at changing hearts and mind will definitely be reflected broadly.
We are super glad to see Morehouse moving into this positive direction. There are a few questions that remain unanswered. As a traditionally all-male school. Will the institution look specifically at individuals who transitioned from female to male? Perhaps they will be opening up to everyone regardless gender at birth. In any event time are changing.
